Implication of leadership (kepemimpinan)

How is emotional intelligence related to effective leadership ? For onr thing, a leader’s emotional abilities and understandings play a key role in charismatic leadership behavior, as described earlier in this chapter. Charismatics leaders generally hold strong emotional convictions about their personal values and beliefs and are emotionally expressive in dealing with followers. In addition, these leaders exhibit self-confidence, determination, and persistence in this face of adversity.

A high level of self-awareness, combined with ability to manage one’s own emotions, enables a leader to display self-confidence and earn the respect and trust followers. In addition, the ability to manage or temporarily restrain one’s emotion can enable a leader to objectively consider the needs of other over his or her own immediete feelings. Giving in to strong feelings of anger or depression, for example, may intensify a self-centered focus on one’s own needs and limit the ability of the leader to understand the needs of others or see things from other perspectives.

The emotional state of the leader impacts the entire group, department, or organization. Leaders who are able to maintain balance and keep themselves motivated are positive role models to help motivate and inspire those around them. The energy level of the entire organiation increases when leaders are optimistic and hopeful. The ability to empathize with others and to manage interpersonal relationships also contributes to motivation and inspiration because it helps leaders create feelings of unity and team spirit.

Perhaps most importantly, emotional intelligence enables leaders to recognize and respect followers as whole human beings with feelings, opinions, and ideas of their own. Empathy allows leaders to treat followers as individuals with unique needs, abilities, and dreams. Empathic leadres can use their social skills to help followers grow and devlop, see and enhance their self-image and feeling of self-worth, and help meet their needs and achieve their personal goals.

Emotionally intelligent leaders can have a positive impact on organizations by helping employees grow, learn, and devlop; creating a sense purpose and meaning; instilling unity and team spirit; and building relationships of trust and respect that allow each employee to take risks and fully contribute to organizaton. Leaders who lead with the heart often can take the organization to a higher level motivation and performance. In the final section of this chapter, we will focus on two key emtional categories and examine how leaders emphasis on either fear or love impacts followers and the organization.
